How Do I Look?

She rose. She leaned in towards her legs and picked up her bag, placing it on her lap. She collected herself and lowered the over-head mirror. She ran her hands in her hair and shook, reviving it. She met her eyes in the mirrors, and did not bare to stare for more than a second. Without looking down, she fiddled in her Prada bag and produced her little magic box. Still not looking down, she tilted slightly to the left, and then to the right to check if her hair was flawless. She applied some more make-up, freshening up her already-almost-perfect look.
She leaned in closer to the mirror, and artistically shaped her eyes, widening them. She tilted her neck upwards, her eyes moving downwards at the same constant rate until she met her lips in the mirror. She tried not to think too much while she was adding some lip gloss. Pressing her lips against each other, she leaned backwards and checked herself again in the mirror.

A knockout. By her own standards. A true knockout.

She lifted herself a bit to straighten her skirt from underneath. She pulled down on her shirt. She reached for the door handle and got out of the now-parked Ferrari. She bent down to check her heels intact, and made her way to the parked Maserati Quattroporte.

She started her car and looked to her left. She waved to the driver of the Ferrari and smiled.

  • Common my dear, she left his car and she is taking extra care for her looks. And she can't look her self in the eyes. That man she done somthing Bad.

    By Blogger Hussa-G, at 23.12.05

  • eh 7issa 3adel .. bas i thought u were hinting shes a hooker "lady of the night", she isnt (in that sense)

    By Blogger Temetwir, at 23.12.05

  • First I thought she was. But when I though about it more and more and about what she drives(Maserati Quattroporte).
I feel she knows what’s she is doing is wrong but I feel she is running from something.
    She is unhappy.

    By Blogger Hussa-G, at 23.12.05

  • I don`t like her... I don`t know why... I feel so, I just feel so...

I don`t want to discuss her behaviour or taste.
Everything is so cold in this description of doing make-up.
If I had to describe how any usual girl applies her make-up, I would do it in a funny clue. It would be more warm & amusing.

But this girl is like a courtesan.

"She tried not to think too much while she was adding some lip gloss".
my 1st feeling: poor girl, there is something she does not want to think of (& may be it`s so)
my 2nd feeling: just funny... funny, funny...

P.S. but may be she is not guilty :/

yes 7issa thats mark wahlberg .. everybody was telling me to change the chucky pic, i guess no one got it .. and i just watched four brothers, so it all falls into place now hehe

By the way I did not mean, that I don`t like your description. I wanted to say - I like it :) Just from your description I tried to draw a conclusion about Her.

Temetwir, do you understand anything in the philosophy of Gegel?

    By Blogger Sever, at 23.12.05

  • a tad bit way too obnoxious.. and hey Tem, how did you know these tiny intimate little details that go on in a gurls head while she's in her car :P dang i thought i was the only superficial chick out there hehehhehehhehehe
but the whole bling bling angle really made me dislike this story :|

By Blogger Extinct Dodo, at 23.12.05

  • how do u come up with such stories ? God ! is there anything nowadays that the guys don't know about make up, dresses and girls stuff ? ;-p

welcome back , enjoy kuwait ;-)

By Blogger Mother Courage, at 23.12.05

  • I wonder what would the scenario be without the mirror!

    By Blogger ArtFiNaLe, at 23.12.05

  • Ok, I wasn't going to post about this topic, but I was planning on posting about something I witnessed in the ladies room of one of the malls here. The scene likewise included a knock-out applying her makeup. Bas even though I as a girl am experienced with the little feminine flourishes that go into applying make-up, plus I actually am privy to watching such relatively intimate scenes regularly, I have to tell you that mashalla, you have a good eye Temetwir. The photorealistic details in your description were more than what I would have expected from a guy to be able to deliver :)

Two thumbs up for this short yet provocative decriptive piece, Tem. With tiny details you have managed to invoke a deeper psychological landscape and social commentary.

    Gigi, critically

    P.S.
Oh my god on my second reading just before I was going to post this comment I noticed what I thought was a discrepancy in the piece when you said "She rose". I was going to tell you "wait she can't have risen because she wouldn't get out of the car and then sit back down again to apply her make up!"

It was only then that it dawned on me what she had been doing! :|

Gasps and widened eyes of comprehension ensued :r

And I thought it was only about a girl feeling guilty for cruising around in a guy's Ferrari! :|

    P.P.S.
Temetwir why don't you change your blog settings so that each comment has a time stamp on it? Moo chinna awnas? :)

  • wow.. ok i never saw something as bad in kuwait in public.. but i only hear of them.. lets just say that a friend of mine saw a similar situation, only problem was.. was that it was in RAMADAN at 2:30 p.m !!! khooooooooooooosh 9iyaaaaaaaaaaaam .. shababna w banatna gamaw iybe3oonha a little 2 much.. at least get a ROOM for crying out loud...

    By Blogger Dr.Lost, at 23.12.05

  • yup, it's all in the first two words!! amazing how much words can elude to without even saying anything.. the same way we, as people, assume/jump to conclusion based on pieces we pull together.. whether the image we derive is accurate or not, is a different story.

    nice, Temetwir!

  • 7issa i just talk about my experiences.. why do u ask why i wrote abt her is the question?

laialy thanks, im glad theres realism in there .. and yes, the grl is beautiful ka shakel, but the point is what good is that? what good is the style? what good is the care?

TNC oh yes yes i know, i was talking abt the girl also .. and no, i dont know anything about the philosophy of Gegel.. tell me more plz

    - thanks, im glad u like it and that u too see it realistic + that u say its short yet provocative, i like the fact that everyone has taken something diff and focused on a certain aspect they saw in it

    - its all about misdirection and the perception of whats left, isnt it?

    - ma fahamt sheno y3ni aghayer my settings that each comment has a stamp? can u explain plz? :)

dr lost its not a question about whether it happens or not, or how often it happens .. i think those guys and grls need to understand that the other person is human and whatever he or she does will have consequences..
abt ur tag, i posted a pic of my apartment a while back man .. no disrespect

  • I might not like what she's doing, but girl's got balls. I like this peice because for once, the girl knows exactly what's going on. She's not someone being victimized by either men or fate (as is the usual case with your woman subjects :P ). Great writing as always! :)

    By Blogger McArabian, at 23.12.05

  • Loved the discription.
    It was perfect.

I will not comment any furthur.

mcarabian how is she courageous? shes stupid..
how does she know whats going on? shes being used..
and i dont think that in my writing i victimize women by men nor fate, only feminists would think that

    and thank u again :)

  • dc am sorry i was replying as u were commenting, thanks teslimeen .. :)

    By Blogger Temetwir, at 23.12.05

  • Temi, to be honest I would have never gotten it witout having read GIGI's comment. But after I read the comment and read it again it was crystal clear. I like the fact that you don't throw the facts into the reader's face and leave them guessing. I've been reading your peices for a while and I think lately you've been stepping up your stuff several notches. I hate "hard sells" and vulgarity when you're trying to communicate something, I like soft sells and appealing to the reader's curosity and sense of iquisitiveness. This is what you did in this peice and the one before it. In this manner you show your reader that you truly respect their mind and view him/her as intelligent. At the same time you communicate a message that there is darkness and loss in a beauiful young lady who can't seem to get herself to look into her own eyes. I think her continuous attempts to fix her makeup and hair are due to the feeling that she can't fix herself on the inside.

I really like how you said knockout "by her own standards".

    Temi, amazin amazin amazin mashalla

    By Blogger ZinZinQ8, at 23.12.05

  • zinzin i doubt that u wouldnt have ever gotten it..
and thank u, im speechless (again) becoz ur saying exactly what i intended .. bas el sara7a i dont want to write such stuff in direct form becoz the message wont get across and im sure ppl will miss the point of it being a shame ..
i like how u make sense of all her actions too and that u say she cant fix herself on the inside ..

3ajabteeni lama rakaztay 3ala by her own standards .. fa la7ad yegoli "thoogek yam3awad thogek" :P

    By Blogger Temetwir, at 23.12.05

  • Give her some credit - any girl who goes down on a guy in his car probably knows the score.
She's ballsy because she doesn't care about getting caught. Y3ni she even decided to touch up her make-up. I'm not saying she's cool, I'm just saying it takes a lot for someone to have such a carefree attitude in Kuwait.

    By Blogger McArabian, at 23.12.05

  • McArabian, I think the peice goes far deeper than a representation of a "ballsy" girl. The fixing of the makeup is her trying to fix away her guilt but it's not working. Besides, I think that most girls in Kuwait, even the ones who do such things know this is wrong. So when they do it it has a lot to do with weakness on the religous level and even weakness from the guy whos pressuring her and beleive it or not weakness from the guy who she thinks will fall in love with her and marry her if she submits to his will. Ya3ni she's maskeena and thay3a and not ballsy at all.

    By Blogger ZinZinQ8, at 23.12.05

  • mcarabian if she doesnt care abt getting caught, then why would she hide away what she did by re-appearing as if nothing happened? ..
why do u have to bring kuwait into it? what if that happened while i was in the UK, would it have been "cool" or something else? ..

and everyone, no, shes not a slut/bitch/whatever naming u wish to use

zinzin ur so right on so many levels all i can say is WORRRRRD

    By Blogger Temetwir, at 23.12.05

  • Brother, U R a man with a gift. Mashallah 3laik.

However, I would like to see your prespective writing not just the discriptive, so we get the moral of the story, cause for some of the readers it might not be obvious.

    Barak Allah feek.

    By Blogger 3teej, at 23.12.05

  • wow.. u never cease to amaze me, you're good at making people get sucked into the story...

anyway, why's she fixing her eye makeup if they're done already? i mean, if they've been making out, the lip gloss is understandable, but why the eye makeup..
and i don't understand how a chick can even apply makeup with the guy watching her (or maybe zipping up his fly)...

*sighs* alla ey3een our fucked up society...

By Blogger Ms. Sarah, at 24.12.05

  • At first I was thinking: GOSH what a vain woman....too much into her looks, there's so much more to life than that fakey over make-uped, tilt hair left/right and carrying teeny weeny overpriced purses....

THEN I was like ooooh.... Occupational Hazard...he he he!!!

    By Blogger samboose, at 24.12.05

  • 3ateej teslam oboy ma 3alaik zod :)
about the perspective-writing, i guess u mean i should narrate my own point of view as the characters do what they do? baine o bainek im not too keen on doing that when discussing stories like these .. i know what u mean though, and ur right, not everyone would get it from the first time and i think thats the best part :))

Swair thanks.. the make-up (whole deal) is up for u to decide, ur right in asking, but ur on ur own in answering (if u know what i mean) and lets not get carried away saying our-fucked-up society,, it happens everywhere and its wrong everywhere.. id like to think its abt the humans (boy/grl)

samboose but ur right, she is vain and she should be told that theres much more to life than that fake make-up and magic box and purse and car etc etc .. tegoleen occupational hazard 3ayal ha? yozay hehe :p
